Arts & Crafts Hand Painted Church Glass Window Bible Reading Mary, Fire & Angels

About the Item

Unique work of religous art, former church or cloister window. This 'fire-painted' or stained glass church window possibly depicts a biblical scene or maybe 'just' the image of the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels and various symbols that paint a bigger picture. We believe that the fire we see in this window has a symbolic meaning, in that it signifies the burning love that the Blessed Mother has for Her Son Jesus and for us. Unfortunately we lack the knowledge to be sure, but what we can tell you is that the quality of the Arts and Crafts workmanship is second to none. The colors of this window and the perfectly stylized biblical figures also tell us that this can only be the work of a master craftsman. Not only were all the images hand-painted on seperate pieces of glass, afterward they were also placed in the kiln at very high temperatures. The type of metals that were used in the paint largely 'decided' what color the picture would be after the paint was burned onto the glass. Mind you, this was a very expensive technique, because it was both very labour intensive and also very risky. Because of the soaring heat that is required for this technique to work, many of these paintings on glass would break in the kiln. Again, we love the stylized manner in which this stunning, book reading Holy Woman (on a column pedestal) and the kneeling angels with their various attributes and the owl are presented. And with the sun / daylight behind the glass this church relic truly comes alive, making the burning flames and the deeper meaning of this antique shine even brighter. This composition and these colors are an absolute joy to behold. Maybe handcrafted, aesthetically pleasing and educational works of religious art like this can help bring (back) morality in the minds and hearts of generations to come. Deo volente.
