About the Item

Crucifixion. Enamel on copper. Limoges, France, 16th century. Rectangular copper plate that has been given a blue finish on the back and on whose front the Crucifixion is depicted. Jesus appears still alive, on the Cross, dressed in a small blue loincloth that moves in the wind; to His right, Mary and Saint John dressed in tunic and mantle, and on the other side, Mary Magdalene holding the feet of Jesus, a figure and Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea; note both the green of the ground and the golden touches that enhance the figures and the background, with trees and not an open landscape. Limoges enamels are known as a series of metal pieces (copper, silver, gold) with a religious theme decorated with the champlevé enamel technique using a series of colors (blue, green, white...), inherited or inspired by the works of the Monastery of Silos (Spain), and with a great boom throughout Europe in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Production had already declined by 1370, when Limoges was sacked by the English. However, towards the end of the 15th century it resurfaced, but already with the “painted enamel” technique and clearly Renaissance models in terms of themes, iconography, clothing, lines, compositions, etc. Compare the 16th-century Limoges plaque of the Crucifixion (attributed to the Master of the Orléans Triptych) in the Metropolitan Museum of New York; with that of the end of the 16th century of the Barnes Foundation; the outstanding examples of The Frick Collection of New York in the United States; one from Limoges from around 1560 from the workshop of Pierre Reymond (1513-1584) that does not have a landscape background and is in a private collection; neither does the Limoges plaque dated 1541 that shows the Seven Sorrows of Mary by the same author and is kept in the National Museum in Warsaw; etc. · Size: 17x1x25 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.

Relief made of carved and polychrome wood that shows an old man with a particular headdress (reminiscent of some chaperones) lying on a bed and accompanied by two friars dressed in habits, who talk to each other. Iconographically, the figure of the old man lying on the bed (note the cushion that raises the upper part of the body, following the common use of the time) who has not died (probably) because he was not completely lying down, is reminiscent of how he was usually represented, for example, to San Antón, San Jerónimo, etc. It is not very likely that it is the subject of the Transit or Death of Saint Francis of Assisi due to the absence of the Stigmata and due to age. It would be part of a cycle of scenes in the altarpiece of a church, an accompaniment that would give the viewer more clues about the identity of those represented.
