About the Item

Domestic altar with "The Last Supper" and "God the Father". Relief in alabaster with polychrome stucco frame. Possibly, school of Malinas, towards the middle of 16th century. Carved alabaster plate formed by a scene and the frame of it. A plaque shows the theme of the Last Supper: an architectural background, of classicist influence, with a hanging and a templete of fabrics to emphasize the figure of Jesus, who, surrounded by his Apostles (these in varied attitudes of surprise), appears giving A piece of bread to Judas (identifiable thanks to the money bag). It shows, not the most represented moment of the Blessing of the Bread and the Wine, but the one in which Christ reveals the betrayal of Judas, reflected in the Gospel of St. John (13: 26-27) when Jesus said that the traitor would be that To whom he would give a piece of bread soaked in the sauce of a dish. The polychrome stucco frame of this relief also shows a great amount of elements of classicist inspiration that show a strong influence from Renaissance Art. The Last Supper scene has a band on the upper side and the sides of vegetable elements joined by lacerías, with masks at the corners and at the center of the upper side. They are framed these three sides and the inferior one with a molding much simpler. And, outside the same, two elements are placed on the sides and another on the top. On the sides there are C-joists, scrolls, moldings, pine cones hanging from loops and an infant figure seated in this architectural composition; In the upper part, a semicircle covers another relief of alabaster with God the Father and, on this same piece, three naked figures similar to those of the sides, accompanying another composition with lacerías, volutes, pineapples, etc. The composition is fixed on a cloth-lined plaque, for better exposure. The present work recalls notably a plaque with relief preserved in the London Victoria & Albert Museum, made circa 1550-1560 in possibly Mechelen. It also has scenes in alabaster without polychrome and an elaborate frame, decorated with figures, scrolls, architectural elements, etc. Of great influence classicist and a clear Italian memory. Mechelen was a center known for its production of small-sized alabaster sculptures, often referred to as "Mecca dolls", with the Virgin Mary, Saints, etc .; But also created reliefs in the sixteenth century (with a high point by the middle of the century) in such large numbers that it is possible to say that many examples have come to us, although most are not as complete as the present. One very similar to the Victoria and Albert mentioned, is conserved in the Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels. However, this framed relief resembles both the decoration of the exterior frame and the relief (theme and composition) to one of the domestic altars with the Last Supper, namely the one made circa 1550 in Mechelen and currently preserved in the Rijksmuseum of the Netherlands, which has two columns and a top most elaborate auction; The other one of the domestic altars of the same time that the museum has has, nevertheless, a series of details in common with this same domestic altar."
