Exceptional Edo Period Ritual Vajra Set with Bell and Inscribed Bronze Base Dated Kaei 1 (1848), Donated to Myōken Shrine A rare and complete Japanese Esoteric Buddhist ritual implement set from the late Edo period, dated Kaei 1 (1848). This remarkable ensemble includes: Five-pronged vajra (五鈷杵, gokosho) – Symbolizing the perfection of the five wisdoms Three-pronged vajra (三鈷杵, sankosho) – Representing the three roots (body, speech, and mind) Single-pronged vajra (独鈷杵, tokko) – Representing focused spiritual power Ritual bell (法鈴, horin / ghanta) – Signifying the sound of wisdom Quatrefoil bronze base – Heavy and finely cast, with sockets for holding the implements, supported by three pegs The underside of the base is beautifully engraved with a dedication that reads: Inscription Translation: 阿州那賀郡 和食村北地 大西至住賀冶 奉納中津之村妙見宮 嘉永元戌年四月三日 義寛代 Translation: Awa Province, Naka District Washoku Village, Kitachi Donated by Ōnishi Itaru, resident of Kaga Offered to Myōken Shrine in Nakatsu Village 3rd day of the 4th month, 1st year of Kaei (1848) On behalf of Gikan Historical Context: This set was commissioned as an offering to Myōken Bosatsu (北辰菩薩), a celestial deity associated with the North Star, guidance, and protection. The donor’s name and precise location are recorded, providing strong provenance and making this a rare documented ritual object.
