French Quimper pottery, Madonna with child, ca 1900
A Quimper pottery statue of Madonna and Child, marked with the mark HB, used from 1883-1904, France. With text Saint Vierge at the edge of the base, meaning Saint Mary. The statue shows signs of use. The measurement is 25 cm high, 8 cm wide and the depth is 8.5 cm. The weight is 432 grams
Quimper: Jean-Baptiste Bousquet, master pipe maker (producer of pipes and earthenware objects) moves from the south of France to Locmaria at the end of 1699. In 1705, his son Charles, who will succeed him, joins him. Jean-Baptiste's second son Pierre, master potter in Marseille, also came to Brittany in 1707 and founded the first pottery here in 1708, after his father died.
Pierre mainly produces religious and decorative objects: Madonnas, busts, prayer caves, vases, barrels and especially dishes. Other earthenware crockery will follow later.
