Impressive and sizeable sculpture of Christ with a gruesome crown of thorns. This striking sculpture of Christ on a rounded triangle wall plaque dates from the 1920s. This bronze actually is the deepest in relief by Sylvain Norga that we have ever seen. With Christ almost literally coming out of this plaque, it really is a sculpture and a wall plaque into one. Unlike other sculptures of Christ, we think here Sylvain Norga consciously chose the crown of thorns in its most gruesome and painful form. When you pick up this piece there is almost no getting around these hard and pointy thorns. We think the artist made these thorns extra large and awful to emphasize the horrible suffering associated with His crucifixion, both for Christ and for His followers. Due to the depth, the S. NORGA maker's mark in the right bottom 'corner' is clear to read.
