Hand Carved Antique Wall Plaque Sculpture of The Assumption of Mary with Angels

About the Item

Important work of religious art, because of its uniqueness, meaning and superb condition. With religious art as one of our specialities, we were very surprised and enthousiastic when we first saw this wall sculpture. In our combined 30 years of experience in this trade we had never before seen a sculpture of this subject matter and we immediately knew we had to have it. We have searched the worldwide web for other sculptures depicting the Assumption of Mary or 'Ferragosta' as it is called in Italty, but there are none to be found. Not anywhere in the world. In this work of art Mary is guided to the heavens above by two (guardian) angels. With her feet comfortably 'hanging down' and with her eyes looking at the sky the sculptor, in our view, has perfectly captured Mary in a truly peaceful manner, both faithful and in anticipation of what is waiting for her. The pair of angels are carefully and lovingly giving Her all of their care and attention and this scene really radiates a spiritual kind of love and devotion. For it to be in perfect condition makes it even more special and beautiful to look at. Have you also noticed the little cloud on the top right and the equally perfectly hand carved holy water vessel underneath? The three hand carved cherubs in this 'clouds-design' vessel have the most friendly faces and they too ad to the beauty and uniqueness of this quality crafted work of religious art. In many countries in Europe, August 15th still is a national holiday which shows the importance that the Assumption of Mary still has in many of our societies. Because of the already symmetric, but flowing lines in this Mary sculpture, we feel it is late Arts and Crafts or early Art Deco in style.
