Largest Pair of Arts and Crafts Floor Candle Holders / Alpha & Omega Candelabras

About the Item

Unique and all handcrafted, church or monastery floor candelabras by van Roosmalen. In 1886 the goldsmith's shop ‘Gebroeders van Roosmalen’ was founded in Utrecht, Netherlands by Josephus van Roosmalen and they were specialized in ecclesiastical art. Five generations have continued the business whereby the owners usually were the designers and in the high tide of their business they had as many as 13 specialist craftsman working with them/creating the designs. This largest ever pair of brass and bronze Arts and Crafts church candelabras was made around 1920. This marvelous pair was first designed on paper and then one or more craftsman hand created these large works of religious art out of thick sheets of brass. The combination of the beautifully shaped bases, the stems and the six arms with the seventh candle holder as a spike in the middle, truly is a joy to behold. On the perfectly symmetrical base on the left is the Alpha symbol and on the base of the other candelabra is the Omega symbol. These symbols of Christianity obviously need no explaining. Have you also noticed the three ancient jewish oil lamp design candle holders on each of these rare, floor candelabras? Finally, both candelabras are marked on one of the three bronze feet with the hand engraved maker's mark 'Roosmalen, Utrecht'.
