A Pewter and Copper Mezuzah Case by Shalom Bodner, United States 20th Century
Located in New York, NY
A Refined Pewter and Copper Mezuzah Case made by Shalom Bodner, in the United States in the 20th Century. Shalom Bodner (1932-) Born in Czechoslovakia, Bodner immigrated to Israel in 1949. He studied painting and sculpture at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and continued his studies at the Grande Chaumiere in Paris. In 1979 Bodner came to the United States where he pursued a career in jewelry and Judaica. He has been a painter for over forty years and has been exhibited throughout Israel, Europe, and South America. Each item he creates is individually hand-crafted from mixed media which includes silver, brass, copper, bronze, and lead-free pewter. A must-have for any Judaica Collector; this unique Mezuzah case is truly eclectic, made by a person who lived in many parts of the world, and his creativity is derived from those places. This mezuzah is not made in the general fashion of one solid piece rather three separate ones and when combined makes a fabulous designed casing. The top of the mezuzah case is decorated with a hamza and foliate scrolling and is inserted through its center cylindrical copper shaft to secure the scroll within. the center is beautifully embossed with foliate borders Surrounding the center "Shin" are the words "Shema Yisroel" spelled forward...

The Holy Bible, with Annotations by the Rev. Dr. Challoner, Illustrated, 1876
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
The Holy Bible, Translated from the Latin Vulgate: Diligently Compared with The Hebrew, Greek, and Other Editions, in Various Languages. This Old Testament was first published by the English College at Douay, A.D. 1609, and the New Testament, by the English College at Rheims, A.D. 1582. With Annotations by the Rev. Dr. Challoner; Together with References, and an Historical and Chronological Index. Revised and Corrected According to the Clementine Edition of the Scriptures. New York and Montreal: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1876. Illustrated. Large quarto, with original full leather carved and gilded boards, original pewter clasps, and rare gilt gauffered edges. Presented with a custom-made archival clamshell box. Presented is a beautifully restored and exquisitely bound Holy Bible from 1876. This family bible was published by D. & J. Sadlier & Co., in New York and Montreal. Including both Old and New Testaments, the bible featured annotations and edits by Reverend Dr. Challoner, along with an illustrated dictionary, historical and chronological tables, introduction also compiled by him. The bible features two Approbation pages, declaring that “this edition of the Catholic Family Bible, having been duly examined, is hereby approved of,” with printed approvals by the Archbishops of New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Boston, Buffalo, Oregon City, San Francisco, Halifax, and Wheeling. Richard Challoner (1691-1781) was a Roman Catholic Bishop in England who prepared several extensive revisions of the Rheims and Douay Bible between 1749 and 1777. The first edition of Dr. Challoner's revision was published in 1749. It consisted of the New Testament only, and professed in the title-page to be "newly revised and corrected according to the Clementine edition of the Scriptures." The next year, 1750, Challoner published an edition of the whole Bible, including the first edition of his revised Old Testament and second edition of his New Testament. The principle alterations he introduced were efforts to make the text more intelligible to the average reader; out of date words and collocations were superseded by more modern and familiar phrases. Challoner continued to revise and publish editions throughout the mid 18th century; his later 1764 edition was his most popular and became the basis of nearly all subsequent Roman Catholic editions of the Bible until the publication of the Confraternity version in 1941. This bible was produced as a family bible, to be handed down through a family with each successive generation. Family bibles were used as a marker of each married couple’s journey through life and the family’s history was commonly recorded in the bible. This bible features pages for a family tree, family portraits, and a marriage certificate...
