About the Item

Central Russian miniature icon depicting to Holy Arab twin brothers and physicians Cosmas and Damianus. Cosmas and Damianus hailed from Syria . They where so called Agioi Anargyroi , ( literally they who take no silver) and offered their medical assistance for free. This made them extremely popular and enabled them to win many for Christ. During the presecutions under Emperor Diocletianus ( 284-305) they where beheaded and became martyrs. Already in the 5th century their cult had spread and Pope Felix the Third ( 526-530) had the temple of Romulus changed into a Church dedicated to the Holy twin healers. On this charming miniature icon the brothers face the spectators frontally and hold their boxes with annointment in their hands. The icon is painted on leafgold in a strict Byzantine style.
