About the Item
Meditative Central Russian icon depicting the Mother of God of the Sign, also titled the Znamenje of Novogrod. Typical for this centuries old iconography is that the Mother of God is looking frontal to the spectator and spreads her arms in the classical Orante gestus which was already used in ancient Egypt and is still used by catholic priest while celebrating the Eucharist. The Christ Child is visible in a round clipeus on his Mother's belly. In the borders 4 saints, amongst others the Church fathers Gregorius and Athanasius. This icon that dates from circa 1800 is painted on a flat panel with sponki inside the panel.
