A Pair of Copper Brutalist Ner Tamid Synagogue Sconces

About the Item

A striking and sculptural pair of Brutalist-style Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) synagogue sconces, crafted from gleaming copper in a bold, modernist form. Each sconce is architecturally designed to make a dramatic impact, measuring generously in size and rendered with powerful, angular contours characteristic of the Brutalist aesthetic. The front lower section of each sconce is formed as a deep semicircular dish, which juts outward in prominent fashion. Concealed within this section is the original recessed bulb socket, intentionally placed to cast an upward glow. This light dramatically illuminates the backplate, which takes the form of a stylized Hebrew letter “Shin” (ש)—a reference to Shaddai, one of the names of God—symbolizing the spiritual light and continuity of the divine presence. The “Shin” is realized in an expressive, angular Brutalist style, with sharply pointed tips and backward-flaring edges that create a dynamic silhouette. When lit from below, the surface comes alive—the high-polish golden-copper finish brilliantly reflects the bulb’s glow, creating a radiant and spiritual focal point depending on the color of light used. Still retaining some of their original electrical fittings and wiring, these sconces would benefit from professional rewiring for contemporary use, but their dramatic form and rich patina remain intact. An extraordinary and rare pair of mid-century Judaic architectural elements, equally suited to historical preservation or as statement pieces in a modern spiritual space or design collection.
