Rare 19th Century Folding Pew, Altar, Desk from Regency Period, England or U.S.

About the Item

Form and function make this piece of furniture unique. If a piece of furniture could be clever, this desk, bench, altar, pew, would go to the head of the Sunday School class. It is versatile, and if it could speak, it would let us in on its original raison d'etre. In the desk mode, only a chair is needed to use this piece. In altar mode, a footstool with a pillow would allow for contemplation and prayer. In the upright bench mode, the altar-desk converts to a seat. In the closed position, papers, a hymnal or other good book could be accommodated here. It is brilliant. I also think it could be the ultimate "time out" place for a child. This piece of furniture was irresistible to us and it is available and ready for its new home. The condition is fair to good. It could benefit from some conservancy to the burl. No one will ever duplicate the gorgeous patina that only come with age or the utility of this useful and memorable item. Thank you for looking.

The stunning appearance of the rosettes that are hand carved into the panel are amazing. The panel seem like it was part of a larger architectural setting and the appraiser wonders if it might have been part of a confessional, although the holes may be a little to large for that. But this is an antique architectural carved and parcel gilt pierced wood panel...

  • 19th Century Corner Chair American or English
    Located in Lomita, CA
The cherub upholstery fabric of this antique corner chair will bring a smile to your face, but the piece deserves a deeper look. It has a secret.: The chair has a "second skin," in a tweed upholstery that someone was reluctant to remove. The cherub upholstery on the armrest of the chair is actually a shawl or drape for the for the chair. It is Victorian, carved and turned walnut on a part-upholstered corner armchair that is English or American from the late 19th Century according to our appraiser. The seat is triangular with a rounded front rail, that is backed by two low arms with raised upholstery. The curved seat rail has a long fringe trim, all raised on four cylindrical bead turned legs on casters. The detachable fabric drape or shawl is priceless. Appraisers beleive this could have possibly been half of a two-piece tete-a-tete chair...
