Perfectly draped in her 'hatwear' and with one of the most realistic and finely handcrafted faces there is a divinity to her presence that will never fail to impress. To us, this work of art sculpture reveals that G. van Vaerenbergh (1873-1927) truly was one of the greatest Belgian (and European) sculptors of his era. St. Catherine of Siena (1347 - 1380) was canonized in 1461. She was a Dominican tertiary and mystic who is one of the most revered holy women in the Roman Catholic Church. As one of the patron Saints of Italy, she was declared a doctor of the church in 1970 and a patron Saint of Europe in 1999. For anyone to be able to hand-sculpt a perfect and serene face like this out of terracotta (or any other material for that matter) and make it last multiple lifetimes, to us, is like the work of a higher power. The manner in which the cloth falls around her stunning face is incredibly realistic too.
