Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible by the Rev. John Brown, Illustrated, 1880
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Brown’s Self-Interpreting Bible. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments, According to the Authorized Versions. With an Introduction: Marginal References and Readings; Explanatory Notes and Reflections. By the Rev. John Brown, of Haddington. And Many Thousand Additional Notes by the Rev. Henry Cooke, D.D., LL.D., President, Assembly’s College, Belfast. Re-Edited, with Considerable Additions by the Rev. J. L. Porter, D.D., LL.D., Professor of Biblical Criticism, Assembly’s College, Belfast. Illustrated by Historical Designs and Scenes from Bible Lands. London: The Gresham Publishing Company, circa 1880s. Large quarto, with original full leather carved and gilt tooled boards, all edges gilt, and metal clasps. Presented with a custom-made archival clamshell box with gilt tooling.
Presented is a beautifully restored and exquisitely bound Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible. Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible was first published in 1778 in two volumes in Edinburgh. The Self-Interpreting Bible was Reverend Brown's most significant work and it remained in print well into the twentieth century. Although undated, this family bible was published by The Gresham Publishing Company, in London, circa 1880.
Reverend John Brown (1722-1787) was a Scottish Minister of the Gospel at Haddington. He wrote numerous works on the bible, including The Dictionary of the Bible, A General History of the Christian Church, and Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible, as seen here.
The design of the Self-Interpreting Bible, Brown explained in the original preface, was “to present the labours of the best commentators in a manner that might best comport with the ability and leisure of the poorer and labouring part of mankind, and especially to render the oracles of God their own interpreter.” Thus, the work contains a thorough history, chronology, geography, and summary, as well as explanatory notes and reflections, on the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. As this was printed as a “self-interpreting” bible, many of these notes occur in the margins, next to the pertaining scripture. This bible is further elucidated by upwards of eight thousand explanatory and critical notes by the Reverend Henry Cooke, D.D., LL.D., a minister of the Presbyterian Church and President of Assembly’s College in Belfast. It was further edited and notated by Reverend J. L. Porter, D.D., LL.D., a Professor of Biblical Criticism at Assembly’s College in Belfast.
A publisher’s advertisement for Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible was printed in the January-July 1880 issue of The American Bookseller journal. The advertisement claims, “Brown’s Self-Interpreting Bible is widely and most favorably known on both sides of the Atlantic. It is pre-eminently A Family Bible, suitable alike for all the members of the household and particularly Helpful in explaining difficult passages, and admirably adapted to promote a Devotional spirit. Also, its unusually Clear Type makes it an excellent Book for Pulpit use...

18th Century Italian Baroque Gilded Ewer Repoussé Copper Liturgical Pitcher
Located in Milano, MI
A stunning Italian gilt copper ewer dating back to 18th century with a circular body featuring a quadripartite decoration defined by the repoussé of a double vertical ribbed frame that frames tableaux decorated with floral scrolls; the background of these sections is finely dotted by chisel tool to underline a very pleasant relief to the embossed parts thanks to the burnishing.
An excellent and unique hand-made pitcher, selected in a private collection of Northern Italy.
This rare golden jug was created to serve wine during the Eucharistic celebration, the Christian liturgical practice. it is an Italian work of art that dates back to 1700, with a wonderful fire gilding, for collectors. In good age related condition regardless of a small dent in the middle part of the body, consistent with the eighteenth-century dating.
The cast handle takes up the motif of the volutes present on the body of the ewer. The spout is closed by a hinged lid with a small floral knob, with minimal deformations near the hinge compromising its perfect closure.
In the upper part, there are welding signs...

Stunning Victorian Lighting Gothic Brass & Mouth Blown Art Glass Pendant Lantern
Located in Lisse, NL
Graceful and all handcrafted antique light fixture.
This early Arts & Crafts era pendant has an aesthetic beauty that you don't find anymore in this day and age. It has the most pleasing to the eye shape and amber color and the handcrafted brass has a marvelous patina. In images 2 and 3 you can see that this unique light fixture started its life as (and still is) a candle lantern. Because of the Gothic quatrefoil details this may have been a sanctuary lamp at the entrance of a church or monastery. The beautifully patinated brass is all hand-crafted, but the unique art glass shade with its unique hand-etched, flowery patterns and amazing color is what makes this antique truly special. Have you also noticed the 'stand-alone' etched oak branches with acorns? They symbolize growth and unlimited potential since an acorn can grow into a huge oak tree that, by itself, can seed an entire forest. Both with the light switched on and off you could not wish for a more stylish, European antique fixture. It is of the kind that you certainly don't find anymore in this day and age. This ideal hallway or bedroom pendant light...

14.75" High, 6.75" Wide, 6.75" Deep; 13.25 lbs total
History:
A reliquary (also referred to as a shrine, by the French term châsse or monstrance) is a container for important religious relics.
The earliest reliquaries were essentially boxes, either simply box-shaped or based on an architectural design, taking the form of a model of a church with a pitched roof. These latter are known by the French term chasse, and typical examples from the 12th to 14th century have wooden frameworks with gilt-copper plaques nailed on, decorated in champlevé enamel. Limoges was the largest production centre; NB the English usage differs from that of the French châsse, which denotes large size rather than shape.
Relics of the True Cross became very popular from the 9th century onward and were housed in magnificent gold and silver cross-shaped reliquaries decorated with enamels and precious stones. From about the end of the 10th century, reliquaries in the shape of the relics they housed also became popular; hence, for instance, the skull of Pope Alexander I was housed in a head-shaped reliquary. Similarly, the bones of saints were often housed in reliquaries that recalled the shape of the original body part, such as an arm or a foot.
A philatory is a transparent reliquary designed to contain and exhibit the bones and relics of saints. This style of reliquary has a viewing portal to view the relic inside. The feretrum was a medieval form of reliquary or shrine containing the sacred effigies and relics of a saint.
During the later Middle Ages, the monstrance form, primarily used for consecrated hosts, was sometimes used for reliquaries. These housed the relic in a rock crystal, or glass capsule mounted on a column above a base, enabling the relic to be displayed to the faithful. Reliquaries in the form of large pieces of metalwork jewellery also appeared around this time, housing tiny relics such as pieces of the Holy Thorn, notably the Holy Thorn Reliquary now in the British Museum.
Condition:
Superb museum quality examples, in excellent original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina. Wear consistent with age and use. Heavily patinated - scattered oxidation. Overall wonderful examples.
Typically reliquaries were not sold in pairs, so to find a matching pair such as this is exceptionally rare.

The historic Stefani silverware was founded in Bologna in the early 1900s by Enea Stefani, who had learned the art of the silversmith at another historic Bolognese reality, the Zanetti workshop. In 1920 Enea Stefani inaugurated his workshop in Via Clavature, which will be the headquarters of the famous company until it definitively closes in 2015. First Enea and his son Alessandro then produce works of the highest quality, sometimes true masterpieces, working the silver with the ancient techniques of chiselling, embossing, engraving, wax casting, enriching their creations with semi-precious stones and high-fire enamels. The great mastery in the workmanship is combined with an aesthetic research and a poetic vein, especially in Alessandro, who succeeds his father in 1974, and who also signs numbered specimens, which lead to the creation of splendid pieces, such as candlesticks, rocaille-style double , cutlery, centrepieces, masgalani-silver basins...
