About the Item

Brass prismatic surveying compass; this is a small compass, Verner's Pattern named after the designer, Colonel William Willoughby Cole Verner (1852-1922) and produced in 1917 and supplied to British officers, typically used in navigation. It can also be held in the hand and thus away from magnetic fields. It’s equipped with a sighting system with target complete with optical prism for magnification and a goniometric compass rose so that the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle can be measured. Complete with wind rose block. Good condition, fully functional, diameter 5.3 cm thickness 2 cm - inches 2.2x0.8. The last photo is the gift box. Curiosity The first historical records of the use of magnetic directive force in Europe date back to the late sec. XII or early XIII and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. The gimbal made its first appearance around the middle of the sec. XVI. An exact description is given in the short compendium "De la esfera y de la arte de navegar," by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise guidelines for the construction of the compass. To the refinements of the instrument can largely be attributed the great discoveries of new lands, from the middle of the sec. XV onwards.
