1930s Wrist Military Compass in the Shape of a Watch Antique Surveyor Instrument

About the Item

Wrist military compass in the shape of a watch in brass, bakelite and leather strap. English manufacture from the 1930s used by English army officers. The compass consists of a magnetic needle free to rotate on a horizontal plane marking the direction of magnetic North and is complete with needle lock, double protractor circle for calculating angles and double sight with target. Excellent condition, perfectly functional, compass diameter 5 cm, 2 inches, thickness 1.5 cm, 0.6 inches. Shipping is insured by Lloyd's London; our gift box is free. The invention of compass is mysterious but it is well known that magnetite was discovered in Magnesia, a city of Asia Minor. At the beginning of ‘300 Giordano da Pisa spoke about magnet as “very useful and necessary” in navigation. Dante in Paradise XII 29 wrote about magnetic needle that indicates the North.
