American Victorian Walnut Cased Standing Magnifying Glass

About the Item

This large American Victorian standing magnifying glass is encased in a carved and turned walnut frame and is adjustable to height with a wooden screw set device. Made circa 1880 the wood is richly colored and has its original finish that has certain decorative turnings ebonized for dramatic effect. Optical objects such as this were used to examine art, curious objects in gentlemen's cabinets of curiosities, libraries and in medical and scientific light research. They were always expensive and costly objects and hard to find in a standing large size such as this one. The condition is excellent but with expected wear and use Dimensions 29 inches tall, 15 inches across and 9 inches in diameter 2275.00.

French Charles X Large Marble and Gilded Bronze Ink Well and Candle Stand

This French carved marble and gilded bronze inkwell and candlestand, circa 1830 is carved from sienna marble. The large block is set with a tray well in front and then the cast bronze sarcophagus shaped inkwell is set up on animal paw feet. Cast with 4 holes to rest the quills or pens two wells for ink and a candlestand in the center. The bronze is well cast and has the more expensive attribute of matte and burnished elements giving an extra rich quality to the objects visual drama. These four books printed in Latin are covered in beautiful old vellum covers and spines. Each book contains text, margin commentary and pictorial illustration to the fronts pages. All but one is from the same library with like beautifully embossed bindings and like blue colored paper borders. These three had at one point clasp binders now gone or in a damaged state. The final book is vellum bound but not in embossed covers and spines.
