About the Item

"Antique Surveyor's Circumcompendium Signed Brand Frères, 1850-1880" Description: Antique Surveying Circumferentor by Brand Frères Brand Frères, Opticiens du Roi à Bruxelles Circa mid-late 19th century (c. 1850–1880) Belgium A superb antique surveying circumferentor (surveyor’s compass), signed “Brand Frères, Opticiens du Roi, à Bruxelles”, denoting the prestigious title of royal opticians to the King of Belgium. This fine example of Belgian precision craftsmanship features: A large magnetic compass with finely engraved brass dial and degree scale Beautifully preserved cardinal directions and signature on the compass plate Sighting telescope with clear optics and adjustable focus Spirit level (bubble level), intact and functional Original brass fittings and hardware Fully operational needle and leveling mechanism Presented in its original fitted wooden case, complete with original interior fittings and closure hardware — rare for instruments of this type and period. Condition: Excellent. The compass mechanism, telescope, and spirit level are all in fully working order. The optics are clear, and the needle swings freely. The wooden case is original, well preserved, with only minor wear This instrument would have been used by professional surveyors, engineers, or cartographers during the mid-19th century for measuring horizontal angles and bearings in the field.
