Torricellian barometer French manufacture from the second half of the 19th century

About the Item

Torricellian mercury barometer, French manufacture from the second half of the 19th century, made of mahogany veneer wood with cedar wood edge threading complete with rare thermometer spiral to alcohol. Printed cardboard dial bearing weather indications in French and double pointer, the first one directly connected to the barometric tube indicates the atmospheric pressure trend, the second one placed on the glass is operated directly through an adjusting screw and serves as a reading nonius for checking the change in atmospheric pressure over time. For safety during transport, the barometer will be shipped emptied of mercury. The mercury will be placed in a sealed container in the package along with the barometer. Good condition, fully functional. Measurements 26x7x94 cm - inches 10.3x2.8x37. Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, a disciple of Galileo, was the first in 1643 to build a measuring instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure. Since ancient times man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict weather patterns. The scientific study of the changes occurring in the atmosphere began in the mid-17th century in connection with experiments tending to prove the existence of a vacuum, which ancient philosophers denied since "nature abhors a vacuum!"
