About the Item

Antique ebonite, brass and papier-mâché, spiral-shaped slide rule designed by George Fuller of Belfast, professor of engineering at Queen's University of London in 1878, made by STANLEY in the early 20th century and housed in its original mahogany wood box, complete with brass stand for mounting on the base and instruction booklet for use. Measure box cm 36x11,7x11 - inches 14.1x4.6x4.5. The last photo is the gift box. The logarithmic line of the ruler is arranged in a spiral on the surface of a cylinder, so as to increase the length of the scale and thus make the calculation increasingly exact. The logarithmic line is 50 turns, and all four-figure numbers have a mark on the scale or are intermediate between two marks, so that exact four-figure results are obtained easily. This type of ruler was the most successful; it was equivalent to eight times the length of a rectangular ruler and allowed three to four decimal places to be read. William Stanley 1829-1909 The son of a mechanical engineer, he began working with his father in 1849, immediately making improvements to technical drawings and creating new tools at the same time. The study of drawing tools was adapted to the needs of the industrial revolution. Around the world, fields of activity such as surveyor, engineer, architect and navigator were expanding at an increasing rate. Surveys were taken of vast areas, such as the Indian continent, while charting huge tracts of ocean. This climate of innovation prompted William Stanley to open his first workshop in Holborn London in 1854 to produce drawing instruments.
