Flemish mortar. Bronze. 17th century.

About the Item

Flemish mortar. Bronze. XVII century. Features brand. Mortar with a circular base with a mouth that extends outward from the two upper stripes and a body with slight entasis and a relief decoration of figurative motifs. In addition to a series of moldings in its external area, you can see two male protomes (heads with mustaches and non-human features) and a band with different elements in the lower part (roles, leaves, quadruped monsters). Note, also, a kind of circular “seal” (or so it seems), with letters (HLB / RA/TE) around a banner flanked by plant elements and placed on three oval objects.
