French 19th Century Louis XIV St. Ormolu And Patinated Bronze Barometer

About the Item

A most impressive French 19th century Louis XIV st. Ormolu and patinated Bronze barometer, after Torricelli. The circular patinated bronze face has the eight enameled plaques depicting the weather. At the center is the hand set onto a decorative pierced scrolled Ormolu mount with a male and female figure. The face of the barometer is surrounded by a lattice etched design with flower like designs. At the bottom of the barometer is a central central reserve with a female mask flanked by 'S' scrolled acanthus leaves with the same scrolls also decorating the two sides. Above the barometer are two cherubs playing in wheat while at the center is a medallion of Louis XIV with a lions head and paws surrounding the medallion. Above is a draped fabric with hanging tassels holding the barometer. The draped fabric is tied at the top by a bow all below a top central cabochon.
