About the Item
Known as an “equal arm scale”, this large wrought iron scale has the traditional “T-form” associated with weighing devices of this nature. Stabilized by a tripartite stand with curved feet, the well-engineered Catalonian (Spain) scale dates to the mid-1800s. Both ends of the arm terminate in eyelets that serve as anchors for the large hooks of the two weighing trays. On one side is a curved bar that supports an 18 ¼ x 18 ¼ platform with exposed rivets. The opposite end consists of a circular platter, affixed by three chains, that holds weights when measuring the mass of an item on the platform. A toupie finial at the top of the arm functions as a decorative method for zeroing the scale. When the scale is zeroed, the finial aligns with the foliate tips of two vertical members that sandwich the toupie. Our wrought iron scale is a well-preserved scientific instrument from the 19th century and would make a topic of conversation for whatever room it is placed in.

Large Antique Wrought Iron and Bronze Double Sided Lectern from France, 19th C.
Located in Dallas, TX
Known as a lutrin in France, this double-sided lectern is highly scrolled and pierced, making a unique and beautiful dais. The imposing French lutrin is comprised of wrought iron with some bronze embellishments (finials and roundel joineries) and dates to the 1800s, although the double-sided platform was added more recently based on the varying patina and welded construction (the bottom is pinned).
An amazing, banded arabesque of scrolls and counter curves emanate from an open roundel, forming the double-sided slant-top platform. The platform is designed to swivel on a rod that runs through it; a ball finial tops the rod, flanked by a pair of Vitruvian waves that form a majestic crest. There is an arbalete edge that extends off both sides of the platform, providing a stable base for holding music...
