Antique French Louis XVI Period Signed Carcano Wall Barometer
By Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain
Located in Forney, TX
A magnificent nearly 250 year old Louis XVI period (1774–1793) hand carved and painted parcel gilt French wall thermometer and barometer signed Carcano. Exquisitely hand-crafted in Paris, France in the second half of the 18th century, exceptionally executed in Neoclassical inspired opulent period King Louis 16th taste. Impressive large size and fine quality craftsmanship, richly detailed, sculpted, polychrome decorated wooden case, surmounted by an ornate carved pineapple topped urn finial, garnished with a single garland swag, over a contoured and rounded solid wood frame creating a most elegant elongated banjo cartel clock silhouette, adorned with brilliant water gilded running ornamentation, outlining the beautifully aged light and airy muted pale green paint finish. Featuring the original hand decorated enamel dial signed Antonio Carcano (1755-1820) a distinguished scientific instrument inventor. The dial is signed: "Jofeph" "Carcano" "Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis"  "Fripiere au phenix" Having a hand-blown glass thermometer retaining remnants of the hand-painted paper label inscribed with atmospheric condition details, over an early barometer with hand painted dial and metal hands, protected behind convex glazed glass face. Mechanical: The wooden planked verso is fitted with an open channel that retains the original mechanical components, including a pair of liquid metal mercury filled glass tubes, vacuum mechanism, long column blown glass tube, stringing, and more. It does not appear to be working / operational, the string/rope deteriorating with age, etc.. but having the original parts is an exceptionally rare occurrence and highly unusual, as workings were commonly damaged and lost centuries ago. Dimensions (approx): 43" High, 12" Wide, 2.5" Deep History: Antoine Carcano (c. 1755-1820) An early maker of barometers, thermometers, and an inventor of various scientific instruments. Of Italian descent, he became famous in Paris, first at 37 rue de la Roquette and then at Place Dauphine. He supplied barometers and other scientific instruments to the Ecole Militaire in 1786; the following year he supplied a tube barometer to British optical instruments manufacturer Peter Dollond (1731-1821). During the Empire his clientele included Sir Benjamin Thompson...

Early 18th Century Italian Compass, Pierre de Baillou, Milan
By Pierre de Baillou
Located in Milano, IT
Compass Pierre de Baillou Milan, first quarter of the 18th century Brass, steel and glass It measures 3.81 in x 3.81 x 0.59 (9.7 cm x 9.7 x 1.5) It weights 0.57 lb (259 g) State of conservation: some signs of use and some slight scratches on both the metal and the glass. The whole instrument is made of brass, apart from the glass cover and the magnetic steel needle. The cup of the compass has a lid and is attached to a square plate; inside the wind rose is engraved and the cardinal points are marked. The square plate is graduated 0 ° / 360 ° around the compass and is divided into four vertices, bearing the inscription: Pierre de Baillou Fait à Milan A shaped radial hand, which pivots between the cup and the plate, acts as a movable indicator. Nothing is known of the biography and activity of Pierre de Baillou. The fact that he signed a scientific instrument, defining it "made in Milan", allows us to hypothesize with some certainty that he was related to François de Baillou (Milan, 1700-1774), a Milanese optician and one of the most famous manufacturers of telescopes and microscopes of his time. Descending from a French family who had settled in Milan, François was nominated Royal Optician by Empress Maria Theresa in 1750. Pierre was probably his relative - perhaps his father - and may have started his business as a manufacturer of scientific instruments in Milan. This was then continued by François. A compass of proportions signed by Pierre is present in the collections of the Civic Collections of Applied Art of the Castello Sforzesco (Tullio Tomba, La collezione Scientifica delle civiche raccolte del Castello Sforzesco, in Rassegna di Studi e di Notizie, 1973, p. 114). A brass sundial from the first quarter of the 18th century signed Pierre Baillou Fait à Milan is kept at the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan (inv. 4141). Anthony John...

French, Period Louis XVI Giltwood Barometer, circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This rare French barometer is from the Louis XVI period, circa 1780. The giltwood barometer is topped with a crown of laurel leaves surrounding a stylized globe medallion. Husks of laurel leaves tied with ribbons encircle most of the glass covered face, and a rectangular block that is adorned with more laurel leaf husks extends downward from the bottom of the face. The molding around the glass is beaded and stepped. The paper face has various weather conditions ranging from tres sec (“very dry”) to tempete (“storm”). Two iron arrows extend from the centrally located compass starburst. The top of the paper says Barometre, while the bottom says Selon Toricelli.  Evangelista Torricelli was an Italian physicist/mathematician who studied under Galileo. Torricelli has been credited with inventing the barometer, circa 1644, after observing mercury suspended in a vacuum tube...
