ABOUT
A clock work, wind up "bottle jack" or "fireplace jack" is a rotisserie device used to keep a roast or bird turning in a fireplace to cook evenly. Signed "John Linwood Warranty," this antique from England dates from the mid 1800's. The original brass key winds up the spring mechanism and works well, turning a few revolutions in one direction, it then reverses for even cooking. The 6 1/2" diameter iron wheel has adjustable rings to attach several items to roast.

A far better option was the bottle jack which derived its name from the shape: the mechanism is housed inside a brass cylinder shaped like a bottle.
