Pair of 19th Century Brass Parabolic Reflectors

About the Item

In the 19th century, parabolic reflectors such as these were employed in scientific experiments to study the behavior of light, heat, and sound. These brass parabolic mirrors, when positioned face-to-face, were used to focus and direct energy from an emitting source placed at the center of one mirror to a recipient placed in front of the other. Adjustable features allowed for precise control over the tilt, distance, and height of each mirror, making them valuable tools for scientific research. Originally used in a laboratory setting, these parabolic mirrors demonstrate the ingenuity of early scientific apparatus. Dated to the 19th century, each reflector features a turned wood base with an extendable metal rod supporting a round, concave brass shade, now aged with a rich patina and subtle oxidation. With striking silhouettes and a soft metallic sheen, the reflectors live on as storied sculptures and offer a glimpse at the curious equipment of Victorian-era science & medicine. Hinge to brass shade is loose on one reflector. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art. Additional Dimensions: Stone Disc: 2"D x 7.25"Dia
