Planet Model, so called Tellurium, Stockholm circa 1900

About the Item

Ancient Planet Model so-called Tellurium Stockholm Metal, wood, paper circa 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 42 x 58 x 21 cm Description: Illustrative model with sun, earth and moon on a heavy, patinated cast metal base. Above the axis of rotation of the base is a disc on which the seasons, the signs of the zodiac and the exact date can be read. There is a candle holder in the centre of the calendar. The light from the candle is projected onto the globe like a sunbeam via a concave mirror with impressive accuracy. A spiral spring is mounted in the brass tube that holds the candle. The spring exerts permanent light pressure on the candle from below. This ensures that the flame is always held in the same position in front of the mirror, even when the candle burns down. The tellurium is set in motion with a hand crank. In this way, the earth rotates around itself, the moon around the earth and the moon and earth around the sun. In addition, the tilt of the earth changes over the course of a "year", i.e. one orbit around the sun. The seasons can be explained from this tilt of the earth. The calendar disc is marked in the centre: FR. J. Berg Stockholm The earth globe is labelled: JORD GLOB Stockholm This planetary model can be used to visualise the positions of the celestial bodies at different times of the year. It is also used to explain the phases of the moon, the tides and solar and lunar eclipses. Condition: The mechanism has been completely dismantled. All wheels and gears have been cleaned and correctly adjusted. The device works perfectly. One of the photos shows the disassembled mechanism.
