About the Item

Prismatic surveying compass signed T.G. Co Ltd London no. B267870 1944 MK III, in use by British army officers during World War II. This is a small vintage compass typically used in recreational sailing, thus on boats less prone to magnetic deflection. It can also be held in the hand and thus away from the magnetic fields of the boat. It is equipped with a target sighting system complete with an optical prism for magnification and a goniometric compass rose so that it is possible to measure the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Good condition, fully functional. Buono stato perfettamente funzionante. Measurements 5.7x3 cm - inches 2.3x1.2. The last photo is the gift box. T.G. Co. Ltd. was the abbreviation used by The Gramophone Company. After merging with its subsidiary His Master's Voice and Columbia Graphophone Co. in 1931 it became EMI (Electric & Musical Industries), using the brand name "The Gramophone Co." for various items, later changing it for wartime contracts to T.G. Co. Ltd. This company ended its operations at the end of World War II. The first historical records of the use of magnetic directive force in Europe date back to the late sec. XII or early XIII and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. The gimbal made its first appearance around the middle of the sec. XVI. An exact description is given in the short compendium "De la esfera y de la arte de navegar," by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise guidelines for the construction of the compass. To the refinements of the instrument can largely be attributed the great discoveries of new lands, from the middle of the sec. XV onwards.
