About the Item
Sikes’ Hydrometer Set by Atkey & Son, Cowes, Circa 1830
A superb and complete 19th-century Sikes’ hydrometer set, by Atkey & Son of Cowes, a noted English maker of fine scientific instruments. Elegantly housed in a dovetail-joined wood case with an inset bone label engraved “Sikes’ Hydrometer,” the box opens to reveal a velvet-lined fitted interior containing all original components.
Included in the set are:
A finely turned brass hydrometer float, engraved “Sikes” with proof markings.
A complete set of ten calibrated brass proof weights, numbered 10 to 90 and stamped “10517,” used to adjust the hydrometer for various alcohol strengths.
A carved bone thermometer, clearly marked “Atkins & Son Cowes,” with a Fahrenheit scale and original brass reservoir casing.
The thermometer was essential for adjusting specific gravity readings based on the liquid’s temperature, as density changes with heat. The full set is nestled in a fitted velvet tray, a luxury detail indicating a higher-grade set, likely used by customs officials or professional distillers.
Historical Significance:
The Sikes hydrometer was officially adopted by the British government under the 1803 Excise Act, standardizing alcohol proof measurement for taxation purposes. Used widely throughout the British Empire, these sets were indispensable tools for gauging the alcohol content in spirits and liquors—often used by excise inspectors, naval officers, and distillers.
Condition:
Very good antique condition. Some expected wear to the case, minor surface marks to the brass, and oxidation to the thermometer base. All components are present and original. Label, thermometer, and weights all intact and legible.
