About the Item

Refractor polarimeter made of painted brass with cast iron tripod base by Steindorff & Co. Berlin D.R.P. Germany, 1920s. It is an antique instrument used to determine the concentration of sucrose and glucose in raw materials and food products based on sugar. Excellent condition fully functional. Cm 36 x 18 H 22. The mechanic Emil Steindorff founded a factory for scientific instruments in the Reichenberger Straße in Berlin in 1879. In 1915 the owners were Otto and Emil Steindorff. In 1925 the firm was called Steindorff & Co. and two years later the firm started to trade with the name "optisch-mechanische Fabrik Steindorff & Co.". During the last days of the WWII the factory was destroyed but in 1951 a firm called Steindorff of America Inc. was founded in the USA to distribute the microscopes. Then the firm is in Berlin again and in the 80s it becomes the "optisch-mechanische Fabrik Steindorff & Co. GmbH".
