Set of Six Mushroom Botanical Scientific Specimen Models by Somso Germany 1950s

About the Item

This rare vintage models of botanical scientific specimen depicts mushrooms native to Central Europe. This kind of items are used as teaching material in German schools or as showpieces in pharmacies. Colorful in natural design they show the children, employee's and customers how mushrooms look like. The models are made using mixed techniques, mainly wood and painted plaster. Some specimens bear a paper label around the stem or on the base with the original writing indicating the name of the mushroom in the german and latin languages. This type of learning material is becoming increasingly difficult to find because new media means that such an "old-fashioned" way of learning is no longer needed. That's why these models or wall charts are now very sought after and are often used for decorative purposes. A very nice way to decorate kitchens, or all kinds of rooms in country-core or cottage-core style. The collection is offered as a lot of 6 pieces. We purchased them at an estate sale auction in the City of Leipzig, Germany. They are made by the well known German company Somso in the mid 20th century. The microfungi models in plaster, are mounted directly on a wooden base with the addition, sometimes, of moss to reconstruct the environment, in addition to showing their anatomical and chromatic characteristics. The size given in the dimensions section refers to the largest item seen on the first picture. All items are marked like seen in the pictures.
