The company was founded in Milan in 1865 by Ignazio Porro (1801-1875) under the name Filotecnica.
Ignatius Porro succeeded in accomplishing an enormous renewal of measuring instruments by conditioning and dominating their evolution in all civilized and civilizing countries for the benefit of all civil engineering works from land registry, roads, railways, reclamation, etc.
Porro can be considered the founder of modern topography; he was a skilled and highly refined builder in the fields of precision mechanics and optics in addition to being a prolific inventor, so much so that at times he was ahead of his time: just think of his invention of the anallactic telescope, that is, a system of lenses with variable focal length (which is now known as a zoom); or one can recall the "Porro vehicle," an arrangement of prisms to straighten images in telescopes and binoculars.
After staying and working in various locations in Piedmont, Paris and Florence, Porro settled in Milan and began teaching at the Politecnico.
Here he has as a pupil the young Angelo Salmoiraghi, and it will be him a few years later who will transform the company into an industry, while also maintaining the initial teaching vocation.
In fact, in 1871 Salmoiraghi became a partner in Porro, and in 1877 he bought the factory, expanding it: by 1890, about 150 workers were working there and the factory covered an area of 1,500 square meters.
From 1906 to the beginning of World War I, the firm took the name Filotecnica Salmoiraghi and expanded its product range: in addition to topographical instruments it produced mathematical instruments, for drawing, astronomy, meteorology, and navigation, and its catalog included more than 300 pieces; the instruments produced were of excellent quality and achieved numerous successes at universal exhibitions.
During World War II, the company was considered a war target and the plants were bombed, but when the conflict ended, the company was able to recover immediately.
