About the Item

Torricellian mercury barometer in mahogany wood, signed Davis 65 Bold St. Liverpool active at this address from 1839 to 1841, complete with reading nonius for checking pressure variation, mercury thermometer, hygrometer, and level for correct positioning dello strumento a parete. Measures 25.5x5,x97 - 6.2x2x38.2 cm. Good condition fully functional. Silver-plated brass dial engraved with weather indications and double hand, the first directly connected to the barometric tube indicates the trend of atmospheric pressure, the second, operated directly via an adjusting screw acts as a reading nonius for checking the change in atmospheric pressure over time; barometer complete with mercury thermometer For safety during transport, the barometer will be shipped emptied of mercury. The mercury will be placed in a sealed container in the package along with the barometer. Since ancient times man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict weather patterns. The scientific study of the changes occurring in the atmosphere began in the mid-17th century, in connection with experiments tending to prove the existence of a vacuum, which ancient philosophers denied since "nature abhors a vacuum!"What made the barometer very popular was the discovery, that changes in atmospheric pressure are related to changes in weather. Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, a disciple of Galileo, was the first in 1643 to build a measuring instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure.
