1889 Rowing Oars, A Pair Of Sculling Trophy Blades Corpus Christi.

About the Item

A fine pair of 1889 Colquhoun sculls trophy oars. The full length Corpus Christi, Cambridge University sculling oar is an original traditional presentation rowing oar with gilt calligraphy and college insignias. The writing on the trophy blade is in good condition and reads "Colquhoun Sculls 1889, E.T Fison, 12..5., Corpus". The oar was painted by Royston and has the crests of Cambridge University, Corpus Christi (pelican in its piety and lily flowers) and what appears to be St. John's College or the Beaufort coat of arms. It belonged to E. T. Fison who was a member of the Cambridge Boat crew for the 1890 Boat Race. There is a paper copy of the 1890 Boat Race crew photo showing Fison taken from 'Fifty Years Of Sport, Oxford and Cambridge' book arranged by The Right Hon, Lord Desborough of Taplow and edited by A.C.M. Croome. This blade reads from the left and we have a sister blade that reads from the right. It is stock # 29100 and is priced the same. They would make a great display hung together. Founded in 1825 by twelve members of St John's College, Lady Margaret Boat Club was the first college boat club in Cambridge and is named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, founder of the College. In its original rules, the Club was to "consist of eighteen contributing members, besides honorary ones", and all members had to be able to row. An early member was Patrick Colquhoun who, in 1837, instigated the Colquhoun Sculls, in the year in which he won the Wingfield Sculls. This oar can be cut down by the leather sleeve and collar to make shipping easier. It would then be pegged with reassembly by means of a threaded rod with nuts and washers, see images of an oar we previously cut down.
