Dallas Cowboys World Champions Football Pennant, circa 1971

Presented is a souvenir felt pennant celebrating the servicemen and women of the U.S. Air Corps who were based in Australia and fought alongside members of the Royal Australian Air Force during WWII. The navy pennant features a printed red outline of the Australian continent with the U.S. Air Corps “wings” superimposed on it. Below, the text reads, “Souvenir of U.S. Air Corps in Australia.” At the very bottom of the pennant is the U.S. Air Corps symbol. Framed according to archival standards, this pennant symbolizes the collaborative partnership between the United States and Australia during the height of the Second World War in the Pacific Theater. Following the swift Japanese conquest of the Philippines and East Indies in late 1941, the remaining servicemen of the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific eventually relocated to Australia, to join other US and Australian units, including the Fifth Air Force, and regroup. The Fifth Air Force was placed under the command of Major General George Kenney in July of 1942. This is a very scarce WWI Work Relief Fund poster featuring the Harvard Radios competing against the Princeton Aviators. The game, held on November 23, 1918, was a benefit football game to raise money for the war effort. The poster dynamically depicts two football players mid-action. Below, the names of the teams are printed in yellow, with the date, location of the game, and ticket information printed in contrasting white. The United War Work Campaign’s logo is printed at bottom center. The logo is composed of a black star and the number 7, with the text “United War Work Campaign” encircling the star in a yellow ring. The poster was illustrated by the artist J. Liello. His signature is printed in stone, visible on the left side of the composition. A large vintage Randolph Turpin carpet. A wonderful impressive carpet made for the British boxer Randolph Turpin (nick named 'The Leamington Licker'). The carpet measuring nearly 3 meters by 4 meters was made by a life long friend, Mr Dennis Quayle, and would make a remarkable wall hanging. Quayle owned a high quality furniture store in Birmingham and supplied amongst other furnishings, high quality handmade carpets. Following Turpin’s triumph over Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world title in 1951, Mr Quayle had the carpet made as a gift for Turpin. Later in Turpin’s life when in trouble, Quayle bought back the carpet in order to help him financially, with the carpet remaining in the Quayle family ever since. Randolph Turpin is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen who plied his trade with courage, honor and skill and gave Britain one of its best nights in a boxing ring. As a 33-1 underdog Turpin humbled the greatest fighter the world had seen, Sugar Ray Robinson, at Earls Court in London to become Middleweight Champion of the World. Sugar Ray was at his peak and the fight was the culmination of the flamboyant champion’s famous tour of Europe. Unable to cope with Turpin’s long reach and unusual wide stance the American struggled to land punches and Turpin’s strength inside was too much and he took the win on points after 15 rounds. He would lose the belt in a rematch 64 days later but Turpin’s achievement is a remarkable one which crowns a distinguished boxing career, he was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2001.
