Martins 'Zodiac' Bramble Golf Ball
About the Item
Martins Bramble 'Zodiac' Golf Ball.
A good example of a 'Zodiac' bramble patterned rubber core golf ball. The golf ball is in fair condition and is manufactured by Martins, England, circa 1906. The ball is marked 'Zodiac Pat' on one pole and 'Martins Pat' on the other. Martins from Birmingham (England) were founded in early 1900's by Patrick Alphonsus Martin and they were one of the first ball companies to make a seamless golf ball.
The ball is approximately 1 11/16 inch in diameter (4.3 cm).
The rubber core ball (the ancestor of the modern ball) began its life in the late 1890's. The first mass produced rubber core ball was by Coburn Haskell of Cleveland, Ohio. The first core balls were hand wound with elastic thread with a Gutta-percha cover, moulded with the raised square mesh pattern of their predecessor. The slight irregularities in the early wound balls made them quite lively, it was not until the invention of the automatic winding machine by John Gammeter (an engineer at Goodrich) and the change of pattern from mesh to bramble that the balls became more consistent and predictable.

Doorstop "Golfer" by Hubley, circa 1920
By Hubley Manufacturing Company 2
Located in Incline Village, NV
This doorstop, also known as "Overhead Swinging Golfer," is more difficult to find than it's "Putting Golfer" counterpart doorstop; which is also made by Hubley.
Manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1920, this cast iron doorstop is in outstanding all original bright paint with no touch up or restoration of any kind, and in wonderful patina. It depicts an older, grey haired man, with typical knicker golf garb, taking a wild swing at a golf ball resting on the grass. It has a semi "hollow" rear with a "238" factory marking, indicating that it is, in fact, by Hubley and original.
It is noted in Jeanne Bertoia's 1985 book on doorstops page 60; and referenced on page 211 of the Smith book on doorstops.
A must for the doorstop or golfing memorabilia...
