Pair Incised Silver Metal Spurs, Latin America, Late 19th Century
About the Item
10 inches long / 4.8 inches diameter of round spurs
Notes:
We believe that these spurs may be of Chilean origin, as Chilean spurs are typically larger in scale and diameter than their Argentine counterparts. By the 1700's, Chilean spurs were being made to 4 inches in diameter because of the many layers of leather and rug padding under the saddle which distanced the legs of the rider from the sides of the horse. By the 19th century, some Chilean spurs were as large as 7 inches in diameter.
The numerous points distribute the pressure of the spur over a large area, making the design more humane. The large diameter, however, makes it inconvenient for a gaucho to walk with the spurs on.
