About the Item

Early 1990s Town & Country Sunny Garcia model surfboard shaped by Jeff Johnston. Made for the 2000 ASP World Champion, Sunny Garcia. Features a round pin design with glassed on thruster (tri-fin) setup. Featuring rare Sunny Garcia model laminate featuring two leopards surrounded by flowers. Sunny Garcia is the 2nd ever ASP World Champion of Surfing hailing from Hawaii. Also known for his surfing career debut in Hawaii at the 1986 Gotcha Pro competition held at Sandy Beach where he was victorious over 1984 World Champion, Tom Carroll. Town & Country Surf Designs (also known as T&C) is a world famous manufacturer of surfboards. T&C started in 1971 with a single store founded by Craig Sugihara in Pearl City, Hawaii. T&C would later expand into a world recognized brand featuring a full line of surf wear and accessories with retail stores across the globe, in countries such as Australia, Japan, and Brazil. The golden age for T&C was the 1980s. During this time, team riders Christian Fletcher and matte Archbold aka the “Air Brigade" were taking surfing to new heights with their innovative aerial approach to surfing. This new form of radical surfing attracted many customers and shapers to the Town & Country label. Around the same time, Sunny Garcia was signed to the Town & Country team, and would go on to become the World Surfing Champion in the year 2000.

Mid-1990s Velzy balsawood longboard shaped by the late Dale Velzy (1927-2005). Features a 5-stringer design with gorgeous wood fin and tail-block. A superb example of Dale Velzy shaped balsa surfboard and beautiful functional art piece. Velzy is credited with conceptualizing many of the promotional techniques now considered a standard in the surfing world. This includes being the very first surfboard maker to form a surfing team, a practice which would became very popular in the future. Dale ‘Hawk’ Velzy made numerous contributions to the world of surfing and as a result was one of the first individuals to be inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame in 2003, two years before passing away. Velzy began shaping surfboards in the 1940's in Manhattan Beach, California. Board of the day were hard to ride and transport due to the size and weight. Velzy saw this as an opportunity and started to shape surfboards using lightweight balsawood which made the boards easier to ride and transport. He soon outgrew his first board shop in Manhattan Beach which was opened in 1950, this shop would later be credited as the first commercial surfboard factory. Velzy later formed a partnership with the legendary board maker Hap Jacobs...

  • Boxing Carpet, Randolph Turpin, Middleweight Champion of the World, Sugar Ray
    Located in Oxfordshire, GB
A large vintage Randolph Turpin carpet. A wonderful impressive carpet made for the British boxer Randolph Turpin (nick named 'The Leamington Licker'). The carpet measuring nearly 3 meters by 4 meters was made by a life long friend, Mr Dennis Quayle, and would make a remarkable wall hanging. Quayle owned a high quality furniture store in Birmingham and supplied amongst other furnishings, high quality handmade carpets. Following Turpin’s triumph over Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world title in 1951, Mr Quayle had the carpet made as a gift for Turpin. Later in Turpin’s life when in trouble, Quayle bought back the carpet in order to help him financially, with the carpet remaining in the Quayle family ever since. Randolph Turpin is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen who plied his trade with courage, honor and skill and gave Britain one of its best nights in a boxing ring. As a 33-1 underdog Turpin humbled the greatest fighter the world had seen, Sugar Ray Robinson, at Earls Court in London to become Middleweight Champion of the World. Sugar Ray was at his peak and the fight was the culmination of the flamboyant champion’s famous tour of Europe. Unable to cope with Turpin’s long reach and unusual wide stance the American struggled to land punches and Turpin’s strength inside was too much and he took the win on points after 15 rounds. He would lose the belt in a rematch 64 days later but Turpin’s achievement is a remarkable one which crowns a distinguished boxing career, he was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2001. Randolph Turpin's titles:- British Middleweight 17th Oct 1950 European Middleweight 27th Feb 1951 World Middleweight 10th July 1951 Commonwealth Middleweight 2nd Oct 1952 Won the British Light...
