Ventaglio di gorgonia proveniente dal Mediterraneo e risalente agli anni trenta. Ottimo stato. Larghezza cm 54, profondità base cm 17, altezza cm 58. Inches 21.6x2x22.8. Le gorgonie sono invertebrati bentonici dalla struttura ramificata e piatta, ricoperta da tessuti molli. Sebbene la forma delle gorgonie possa far pensare ad una pianta, in realtà sono animali marini a tutti gli effetti. Sono definiti “animali coloniali”, cioè costituiti da molti piccoli animali singoli (polipi) che lavorano insieme come uno solo organismo. La parola gorgonia deriva dal greco “gorgone” e indica le ramificazioni tipiche di questi coralli molli che ricordano i capelli intrecciati delle Gorgoni, creature della mitologia greca con serpenti al posto dei capelli. Le gorgonie sono anche denominate “ventagli di mare” proprio per la loro forma caratteristica e ben riconoscibile. I suoi rami infatti si sviluppano saldandosi come un grande ventaglio reticolato piatto. La forma a ventaglio della gorgonia infatti rappresenta il compromesso tra l’esigenza di massimizzare la superficie esposta per intercettare il plancton e gli organismi microscopici di cui i polipi si nutrono e quella di minimizzare la resistenza alle forze idrodinamiche. Come i coralli duri, le gorgonie vivono fissate al fondale o sulle pareti ma hanno uno scheletro più flessibile dal caratteristico aspetto piumato. Bellissimo ventaglio di Gorgonia proveniente e risalente al Nome scientifico: Octocorallia, Alcyonacea Le gorgonie sono animali che caratterizzano l'ambiente delle scogliere profonde, in molte zone del mondo. I grandi rami a ventaglio, che si flettono nella corrente, sono molto ricercati. Con il termine generico di gorgonie si indicano tutti gli ottocoralli dotati di uno scheletro corneo. Le gorgonie sono tipicamente organismi coloniali formati da molti polipi tutti uguali, originati da un polipo fondatore per divisione asessuata. Anche la maggior parte di quelli che chiamiamo coralli molli appartengono al medesimo ordine (Alcyonacea). Le gorgonie sono organismi coloniali formate da polipi. Il tipico polipo degli ottocoralli ha una colonna cilindrica che termina con una bocca circondata da 8 tentacoli pinnati. L'anatomia interna è assai primitiva, praticamente ridotta a uno stomaco, con un'unica apertura, la bocca. Il cibo non digerito viene rigettato. In una colonia esiste una comunicazione tra i diversi polipi, che si scambiano sostanze nutrienti ma anche informazioni attraverso una rete nervosa. Se la punta di un ramo viene disturbata, l'intera colonia reagisce chiudendo i polipi. Lo scheletro coloniale ha spesso una forma ramificata, più raramente allungata senza ramificazioni. Lo scheletro ha un asse di consistenza cornea, formato in prevalenza da una proteina detta gorgonina. Lo scheletro nella colonia viva è rivestito di un tessuto coloniale detto cenenchima, nel quale i polipi possono ritrarsi. L'architettura coloniale tipica delle grandi gorgonie è a ventaglio, con tutte le ramificazioni su un unico piano, e la colonia può raggiungere dimensioni di 3 m di diametro e oltre. Le gorgonie vivono un po' in tutti gli ambienti, anche se sono predominanti e raggiungono la massima diversità lungo il reef profondo. La colonia cresce di solito estendendo le proprie ramificazioni a formare un ventaglio planare perpendicolare alle correnti dominanti. La rete formata dalle ramificazioni intercetta le correnti, le smorza determinando dei vortici di acqua a valle della colonia, che riportano ai polipi le particelle di cibo. La maggior parte delle gorgonie ha colonie a sessi separati, colonie maschio e colonie femmina. In alcuni casi uova e spermatozoi sono emessi simultaneamente e la fecondazione è esterna, ma nella maggior parte delle specie la femmina capta gli spermatozoi, e le uova sono incubate nella colonia femminile. Dall'uovo fecondato si sviluppa una larva natante, che si allontana dalla colonia madre, si fissa e dà origine a un nuovo polipo fondatore.
