Chinese Lacquered Opium Pipe Bowl Stand, c. 1900

About the Item

This tabletop display stand was once used to elevate an opium smoker's collection of pipe bowls, a removable element of the opium pipe often made of fine materials such as jade, yixing red clay, or agate. Pipe bowls were placed stem-down into each of the holes and any falling debris or ash (dross) was collected in the drawers below. Resembling a petite curio shelf, this pipe bowl stand has multiple tiers and a central mirror enclosed by carved dragon scrollwork. Finished with gently worn red and black lacquer, this charming pipe bowl stand is a fantastic collector's item and a storied keepsake of a bygone era. Minor losses to lacquer finish.
