Important Japanese Puzzle Ball – 19th Century

About the Item

An exceptional 19th-century Japanese puzzle ball, carved with great skill and meticulousness, representing a magnificent example of Meiji art and a true curio cabinet object. This complex sculpture consists of a large sphere carved with multiple concentric layers: inside, it contains eight movable balls, all carved within the main sphere, capable of rotating independently, a technical feat that demonstrates a deep knowledge of working with ivory or bone (material not specified, but typical of this type of object). The face is supported by a richly detailed decorative figure, depicting finely carved scenes of Japanese daily life, deer, people, and natural elements. The upper part of the figure holding the ball also rotates, adding complexity and artistic value to the ensemble. Origin: Japan Period: 19th century (Meiji period) Technique: Spherical sculpture with multiple hand-carved inner layers Decorative Motifs: Deer, scenes from daily life, human figures, and traditional architecture Movement: 8 rotating inner balls + movable upper part Dimensions: 40 x 9 x 9 cm Condition: Excellent condition, with period patina An extremely rare piece, sought after by collectors of Oriental art, ideal for museums or curio cabinets.
