Mechanical Bank "Child's Clock Bank" Japan, circa 1950s

About the Item

A unique and quite scarce bank, made in Japan by the Marusan Company for the American market in the 1950's; this all tin bank is known as (according to the graphics on the original box) "The Child Clock Bank"; but it is more commonly referred to as the "Time is Money" bank, which appears above the door of the church. As such, it could also be considered and used as an educational toy. The action is not actually instigated by the deposit of a coin, but rather by a key wind (original key provided). After winding the hex shank in back, and upon release, (or perhaps a gentle push); the pendulum oscillates, while the birds rock back and forth on their perch. Meanwhile, the hands of the clock go around, as if keeping time. The church building colors are nicely lithographed in red bricks with yellow overtones; some black here and there, while the celluloid birds are pinkish in color. The logo appears at the bottom of the back panel (see image) attesting to it's manufacture in Shoten, Japan by Marusan. The bank is in excellent condition, completely original with no repairs and no repaint; it operates very well (see the video that accompanies the listing). Packaging comes with the original key to open the front door and retrieve the coins. The colorful and original lithographed cardboard box comes with the bank (attesting to it's genesis), along with the original yellow key to wind it up.  When it comes to condition, this is at the utmost top end; a very nice toy semi-mechanical bank and welcome addition to any mechanical bank or toy collection. Impossible to find with original box and keys! Dimensions: 8 1/2" high x 4 3/4" wide x 2 3/8" deep. Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage toys. it would behoove an enterprising collector, dealer, or decorator to take advantage of the opportunity to buy as many of the vintage tin toys that I have listed for sale; it would create an immediate quality collection, as most of these toys came, either from a long time premium California collection or from my own shelves. It would take quite some time and effort to accumulate toys this clean, authentic, original, operable and in excellent condition. See my other listings of vintage toys.

For the mechanical bank and toy enthusiast, listed is a tin, lithographed and painted, all original 1960s mechanical bank made by the Yone Company of Japan (see image of logo on side panel). The company was founded in 1950 and is typical of the post war companies who produced outstanding children's toys. The action is unique, clever, and encourages saving money. With the bank wound (attached key wind on the underneath (see image); place a penny on the spot provided on top of the bank. The mouse dashes out of the grey shoe...

  • "Chandler's Bank" Mechanical Bank, American, circa 1900
    Located in Incline Village, NV
"Chandler's Bank" is a somewhat difficult bank to find, especially in all original condition. Considering the vulnerability of two parts; the drawer and the coin trap, it is more often than not found with one or both missing or replaced. This particular example is in excellent condition and completely original in every way, and the details of the manufacture are embossed on the base of the bank "Chandler's Bank, Pat Applied For, National Brass...

  • American Mechanical Bank "Melody-Bank, " circa 1946
    Located in Incline Village, NV
"Melody-Bank" is a rare bank and was manufactured by "Electric Coding Machine Co., N.Y.C." in 1946. American made, this is a genuine and authentic vintage mechanical bank, albeit somewhat later, having been manufactured in 1946. It maintains all of the elements of a collectible antique mechanical bank; pleasing shelf appeal and wonderful musical action. The metal faux textured, green painted casing on five sides is fronted by cardboard on wood, filled with delightful images of "children at play with money" lithography. To operate: Wind up the mechanism by turning the brass dial in front clockwise; then put a nickel, dime, or quarter in the appropriate slot at the top. Music will play as additional lithography depicting children's nursery rhymes rotate on the interior circular dial ("Little Boy Blue", "Mary Had A Little Lamb", etc.). Coins are removed by unscrewing the metal plate at the rear bottom. Bank is in excellent all original condition with fully operable musical mechanism. Dimensions: 7" high x 4 9/16" wide x 3" deep.
