About the Item

This is a very rare collection of 18th and 19th century game-cock fighting instruments from Mexico. The collection includes a Spanish colonial era wooden scale, three 19th century game-cock spurs with leather sheathes and a pair of unfinished spur blanks. The scale is beautifully carved, terminating into a fist with notched calibrations on the shaft and inscribed iron cap. A heavy leaded weight is suspended from one end and a large hook from the other. The spurs (gaffs) feature long, ominous steel blades with forked ends (attached to the leg of the rooster). The two smaller sheathes are most likely original to the spurs. The larger sheath dates to the first half of the 20th century. The pair of spur blanks are colonial and date to the middle of the 18th century.

Dimensions: The scale measures 13 inches long x 13 inches high (to top of suspension chain). The largest spur measures 5 inches long. The spur blanks measure 3 inches long.
