Victorian Scottish Banded Agate, Sterling Silver Ceremonial Swagger Stick

About the Item

Rare Victorian Scottish banded or cairngorm agate, sterling silver ceremonial baton or swagger stick, circa 1890-1910. The impressive lightly-flaring stick-form steel baton mounted with sliced lateral "beads" made of striated agate, steel bands and bog oak, with applied silver "bracelets" or panels to top, mid-section and base, each made with scroll and foliate molded bands and with various engraved lines. The top panel with plated steel loop to top; the base covered with steel cover. It is probable at one time that each of the silver sections was engraved with inscriptions and/or monograms, as well as the maker's mark. All such engraving has now worn off and/or been removed. Highland Ball life came to the fore of Victorian society when Victoria and Albert came to love Balmoral, their Scotts Castle, after their visit to the north in 1852. Still popular with Scottish aristocrats and nobility, the great dances are marked by the need for very specific types of dress, including fancy dress versions of the kilt, kilt pin, dirk, and mock weaponry. The stick measures 15 1/2" L., 3" diameter around it's base, and weighs 1 lb. Condition: Some pitting to the silver throughout, the loop either a later addition or resoldered visibly. A remarkable accoutrement for personal use, for use as a paperweight or fancy, and can be mounted on the wall as a display piece. A strong ribbon, placed through the loop, would allow for the wearing of the stick across the chest during a parade.
