Antique Handcrafted Wooden and Hand Forged Iron Coach / Carriage Strongbox 1800s

About the Item

Very rare and highly decorative antique box with working lock and key. This is another one of those rare antiques that makes you realize that no matter how long you have been in this trade, you will keep coming across pieces that you have never seen before. It is one of the things that makes us love what we do and what keeps our gallery interesting for clients from all walks of life and from all-over the world. We can, in all honesty, tell you that we are not sure which country this piece comes from, how old it is exactly or what is was used for. There probably are no books where you can learn about this type of chest, we are not sure. It is our experience in dealing in antiques that judging from the patina, the materials, the wear and the techniques that were used that we are fairly certain that this piece was created between 1800 and 1850. Because of its size and the positioning of the wrought iron handles we think this strongbox (like) chest, with the handcrafted metal top, was made to travel by carriage. Some of the wrought iron rings seem to suggest that they are there to help secure this chest to a coach/carriage. The wear on the iron on some of the bottom corners show that this piece has been extensively used for decades. In image 16 you can even see the marvelously handcrafted dovetails underneath the wrought iron reinforcement. To prevent the wear from causing damage to the surface that this chest is on, former owners have placed two wooden 'gliders' underneath. To us, this unique chest has that 'Wild West look and feel' and with the ever so slightly curved top it can also be used as a small side or end table. If you like the look and feel, the (probable) history and, with that, the enigmatic factor of this remarkable eyecatcher and talking piece then maybe you should be its next custodian. It will look great no matter where you decide to have it on display and/or what you decide to use it for. Our fair price for this unique strongbox / chest even includes perfect packing (custom made) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days. Maximum width x height x depth: 24.8 x 16.7 x 17.7 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

  • Antique Large & Rare, Late 1800s Hand Crafted Wooden Carriage Novelty Cigar Box
    Located in Lisse, NL
Large, masterly hand-crafted and amazing condition wooden antique coach cigar holder. If you are a collector of truly unique antiques in general and of cigar or carriage related pieces in particular then this one of a kind centerpiece could be flying your way soon. Over the years we have sold a few antique novelty cigar holders, but never one of this size and never in the form of a carriage. Back in the day when this type of carriages were the means of transportation for only the wealthiest of western societies, smoking cigars certainly was a manly thing to do and very much 'en vogue'. Smoking cigars also proved that you had made it in this world. For all those reasons, this hand-crafted carriage cigar holder has always been and always will be a statement piece. We, as antique enthousiast, first and foremost fell in love with the workmanship and with the honest and timeless way in which this carriage was hand-crafted. We also love how perfectly balanced and realistic it is and for us to have been given the opportunity to buy yet another unique antique and in such amazing condition again felt like a blessing. The former owner, in our view, had gone a little overboard in trying to be the best custodian, because he kept this unique antique in an aquarium-like glass dome. He certainly succeeded, because this carriage cigar holder is in THE best possible condition. The quality in the details and the overal balance of this coach mixed with the warm patina of the antique wood is what makes this aesthetically pleasing antique a real gem to own and to look at. We believe this work of antique craftsmanship is of museum quality and condition and no matter where you decide to have it on display, this work of art will never fail to impress. In all honesty who would not be impressed (and amused) when being offered a cigar that is in the door of a large, handcrafted, 19th century model carriage...

  • Large Antique Crucifix with a Hand Carved & Bronzed Wooden Corpus of Jesus 1800s
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross. If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do. Our fair price for this one of a kind crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth of the cross & corpus: 56 x 30.5 x 8 inches. Maximum height x width of the antique wooden corpus...
