About the Item

Peculiar and original pair of Art Deco style panthers bookends with L-shaped marble base; they were produced in a craft workshop in Saint-Ouen, a quaint suburb of Paris, France, between 1927 and 1930; we purchased them, along with others, at the antique market in the same city. The Master Craftsmen have depicted the two panthers in their classic pre-attack stance, the whole body is in tension ready for the very quick deadly snap; a depiction charged with strength and suspense; a classic example of Art Deco that exalted in its artistic expressions the forms, strength, and power of both humans and animals. The panthers were made with a sophisticated casting of a metal alloy, then finished by hand to give them a strong and proud appearance; the artisans managed to subdue the metal to their refined artistic sense by creating two unique and fantastic objects, then, with their trademark inventiveness and sensitivity, subjected them to a delicate and complex treatment with special and secret acids to make them take on elegant dark bronze hues. For the L-shaped structure that firmly supports the books, Giallo Siena marble was used. Giallo Siena marble is a natural stone, typical of the Sienese mountains, certainly, one of the most famous and beautiful colored marbles in Italy, appreciated since antiquity for important facing, decorative objects, and jewelry. The Sienese hills are composed of sedimentary metamorphic rocks formed over millennia as a result of movements of the earth's crust; this location gives Giallo Siena its main peculiarity: each slab undoubtedly can be considered a unique piece. A protective backing board was glued under the base. The combination of fine workmanship and the preciousness of the materials made these bookends unique and exclusive. Measures width cm.16, depth cm.7, height cm.11. The items are in good condition, only on one base is a small period repair (see photo). For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
