About the Item

Beautiful, meaningful, practical and decorative mid-century bookends. Given the fact that owls are the international symbol for wisdom and learning, these are the perfect sculptures for book-ends. These fine sized, hand-sculpted marble owls are beautiful in shape and color and they are a true joy to own and look at. What also makes them special is that one is sitting up and the other is in a 'diving' pose. Both have the original and perfect condition glass eyes that seem to look at you from every angle. The square bases of these bookends too are handcarved, but out of alabaster and although they may first appear to look like dice, they are not. The story goes that the first owner of these unique bookends received them as a present for his 54th birthday. It certainly must have taken a true artisan a serious amount of time to first draw and design and then hand-sculpt these unique owls out of this beautiful and rock hard marble. These quality carved, superb condition and weighty owl bookends from the midcentury era also make a great gift for a teacher, student, an author or any other individual with a more than average interest in books or in sharing, spreading and gaining knowledge.
