American Military Planning Globe by Denoyer-Geppert c.1940-1950

About the Item

ABOUT Machine Age-style military planning globe composed of a spun metal blue orb with black slated land masses outlined in yellow. Longitudinal coordinates present on the Equator. The Military Globe was used for campaign planning and became an important element of military academies and at NASA, in addition to serving as geographical learning tools for classrooms (hence the lack of identifying information on the land masses). Presented as an exceptional geographical and military learning tool, it was simply designed and could be written on with chalk. CREATOR Denoyer-Geppert Company, Chicago. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1940-1950. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Metal, Cast Iron. CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. DIMENSIONS H 26 in. W 17 in. D 16 in. HISTORY The Denoyer-Geppert Company was founded in 1916 by L. Philip Denoyer and Otto E. Geppert. In 1916 after both had careers working for Chicago mapmakers, they formed their own mapmaking business under their own names and went on to develop their own line of American manufactured globes, specifically for educational and wartime purposes.
