Early 20th Century Belgium Equinoctial Globe on Iron Stand Signed H. Balieus
About the Item
Decorate an office or study with this spectacular antique globe. Crafted in Belgium, circa 1920, on a scale of 1 : 40000,000 by L. Windels, the stem is holding a 12" swivel globe. The Belgian teaching globe composed of 12 colored spindles and 2 polar caps on steel axis, is mounted on a green and gilt painted cast iron tripod decorated with bands and foliage. The equatorial is graduated in hours and degrees. The globe shows ocean currents, telegraph lines, European colonies, voyages of discovery and ethnic illustrations of the five races inhabiting the earth. Displaying the world as it was around the turn of the 20th century, this globe was created by the Belgian cartographer Hector Balieus.
Hector Balieus was a Belgian education inspector; L. Windels, member of a family of publishers in Brussels spanning several generations. Numerous names and regions of note are outlined on the globe, in particular the Transvaal region in South Africa as well as the extent of the French Empire in West Africa. A beautiful piece of world history that is sure to inspire any traveler. The terrestrial globe is in very good condition commensurate with age and use with wonderful patinated colors.
